When Alisha was a wealthy debutante she had no friends. She had lots of debutantes who would attend her parties, just as she attended theirs, but they weren’t her friends. They were just obligations to be met. Smile, kiss checks, compliment new dress…Big Yawn!
When she escaped her parents and arrived in Capital, where her Gramps was said to live, at first she was terrified. The people in Capital were nothing but thieves and murderers. As she stood on a street corner, pondering how to even begin the search to find her gramps, a sassy hooker stormed over and threatened to take her down if she didn’t leave her customers alone.
Alisha assured her she didn’t want Betty’s customers; she was just trying to find her gramps. By the end of her sad story, Betty had her gathered in her arms and promised she knew someone who could find her gramps. She then left her corner and led Alisha to Denny, a thin small fellow with wicked computer skills. He found her gramps in less than ten minutes and took her to his apartment complex.
Since it was the least safe apartment complex in Capital, he escorted her to her gramps’ apartment. He even opened the door when no one answered. She found gramps nearly incoherent, lying in his own waste on the bed. Denny found a better mattress in the basement while she cleaned up her gramps. The young boy then bought food and gave her a supply of medicine that cost a bloody fortune, but would help him get better.
Then he called another friend, Carol, to help care for Gramps while Alisha taught herself to fly a wind-catcher so she could become a scavenger. Then she could afford the medicine her Gramps needed.
So on her first day in Capital, Alisha acquired three fabulous friends. That was three more than she’d ever known before. Life had never looked better!
SCAVENGER’S MISSION By Liza O’Connor
Meet Alisha: A young woman who refuses to live the life her parents want.
In a single month, Alisha Kane has gone from a wealthy debutante to street girl to scavenger. While testing her new flying skills in the Cully Canyon, Alisha incurs a near-death crash landing. She’s “rescued” by a colonel of the SkyRyders and her life changes forever.
Meet Logan: A SkyRyder colonel in charge of a sleepy fort with little to do other than arrest the occasional scavenger.
For the first time in his life, Logan’s attracted to a young woman, only she’s probably a scavenger and he’ll have to arrest her. But first he offers her a shower and food while he checks on his crew. His videographer has captured her extraordinary flight through the Cully and her flying is astounding!
He forgoes arresting her and puts his career at risk by asking MAC to assess her skills and integrity as a potential SkyRyder. If he can get Alisha into the SkyRyders, it will be his greatest contribution to the Corps.
Meet MAC: The Artificial Intelligence that runs the SkyRyders Corps.
Upon seeing her arrival, MAC upgrades Alisha’s test. Her flying skills are not just excellent; they exceed what was previously thought possible. MAC classifies her as its top asset and soon she proves her value.
But…the SkyRyders remain a male dominated Corps where Alisha’s sense of right and wrong often clashes with her superiors. How long can a rebellious young woman survive in a regimented Corps?
Scavenger’s Mission Excerpt:
Alisha almost told the colonel she didn’t want to become a SkyRyder if it meant reporting to his captain. She recognized the creep as the guy who’d raped and killed her best friend, Betty. Only one look at the bastard’s eyes told her running away would be exactly what he wanted, and unless she went back to Flatland, he would hunt her down and make her pay for her showoff landing today.
No, at least here she would have some protection. He couldn’t rape and beat her to death under the watchful eyes of the colonel. Plus, her gramps’ chance of survival was far greater if he had better healthcare.
Thus, with determination and hope, she began the grueling four hours of psych tests to determine whether she could be a SkyRyder. Her success was more important than ever, with DC lurking like a gargoyle in her future.
